Let's Start With An E-Mail Tip

Migrating from Outlook Express

So you've decided to move from Outlook Express to Outlook 2003. The Outlook 2003 Import and Export Wizard enables you to move all your Outlook Express data, including the mail account, all mailboxes, the address book, and rules into Outlook 2003, in a few easy steps. First, you need to import your Internet Mail account settings. Here's how:

  1. In Outlook 2003, choose File, Import and Export.

The Import and Export Wizard appears.

  1. Select Import Internet Mail Account Settings from the list box.
  2. Click Next and follow the wizard until the end.
The Internet settings are installed in your Outlook 2003

The Bits and Bytes Radio Show has a new feature, an Internet Bulletin Board!

It has a section devoted to the radio program, another for Questions and Answers regarding your computer problems, and a section for the User Group.

You do not have to register to visit the board. However, registering will allow you to join the fun and post comments, questions, and opinions with the rest of the listeners and group members.  Registering is easy – just click on the word “register” in the upper left-hand portion of the main page of the board, and enter your email address, a user name for the board, and create a password.  Shortly thereafter, you will get an email verifying your registration. There is a link to the board on the Bits and Bytes Radio Show website, or you can get to it directly by clicking on this link – Bits and Bytes Bulletin Board

You’ll be able to keep the show alive during the week by continuing discussions on the board, as well as commenting on PC Tips mentioned by Dave, Forrest, and Vinny.  In this same manner, we can have topics discussing items mentioned at SPCUG meetings or at SIGS.

If you’ve never been to one of these Web-based Bulletin Boards then part of the fun will be discovering how to move around on the board, opening topics, and posting replies.  We even have a section where you can ask questions about “How to do” stuff on the board.

Got something "computer related" to sell? Looking for that rare peripheral? If it's computer related you can submit a short classified ad for exposure in Dave "Bytes". Be sure to include your name and e-mail address in the ad. You can also include a picture of the item. Now some would suggest that there be a charge for this feature but alas, since my bookkeeping skills leave much to be desired I've determined that this will be a free service to all SPCUG members in good standing.  "Bytes" is currently sent to almost 1500 homes in the area. Ad requests will be included as soon as possible. I assume absolutely no responsibility as to the accuracy or completeness of supplied info. All transactions are between consulting adults which leaves me entirely off the hook.

Please let me know by clicking HERE when your merchandise is sold so that I can remove it from the listing.

Are You Into Mapping?

ArmCode has released Arm Map Explorer, which recreates all the functionalities of Google Maps while adding new ones like viewing a map with a coordinate grid on it, getting precise coordinates of any location on a map, moving to a needed location based on specified coordinates, and more. This software brings Google Maps to your desktop and lets you find any location on the planet like cities, borders, roads and other cartographic objects and view them as dynamic interactive maps. You can drag such maps so you won't have to click and wait for graphics to reload each time you want to view adjacent parts of a map. Basically, Arm Map Explorer 1.0 allows you to work with interactive maps in much the same way as you would with a regular street map.

However, Arm Map Explorer 1.0 goes beyond the feature set offered by Google Maps. You can move to a needed location on a map based on the coordinates you specify. Using the object tree, you can easily locate and view capitals of states, large cities, world's landmarks, monuments, international airports and other interesting buildings and locations. You can also save a map as a file or print a map to take it with you on a trip, and use it as a regular paper map. It can, for example, help you study geography, both physical and economic. The program will display a satellite view for any locations such as hydroelectric stations, cities and other large objects. You can zoom the view in and out and pan in any direction.

Arm Map Explorer 1.0 runs under Windows 98/NT/XP/2000/2003 and you can get it without any payment or registration. Additional information on Map Explorer, as well as its installation distributive is available from <http://www.armcode.com>. ArmCode is a software developer that specializes in cartographic software. Along with XMAP, the company is the author of Alien IP and ZIP Pointer. Alien IP locates a computer on a map based on a specified IP address. ZIP Pointer locates a city in North America on a map based on a specified ZIP or postal code. For more information, visit the ArmCode Web site.

Here's An Outlook Express Tip

Attach Files to Outlook Express

In Outlook Express, create a new message and then attach a file to a message by choosing Insert, File Attachment or by clicking the Attach button. (The Attach button might be off the right side of the toolbar -- just make the Composition window wider to display it.) Then select the file to attach or drag the file into the message composition window. Send the message as usual.

When an incoming message contains an attachment, a paper-clip icon appears in the message on your list of incoming messages and in the message header when you view the message. Click the paper clip to see the filename -- double-click, and you may be able to see the attachment.
