The Bits and Bytes Radio Show has a new feature, an Internet Bulletin Board!

It has a section devoted to the radio program, another for Questions and Answers regarding your computer problems, and a section for the User Group.

You do not have to register to visit the board. However, registering will allow you to join the fun and post comments, questions, and opinions with the rest of the listeners and group members. Registering is easy – just click on the word “register” in the upper left-hand portion of the main page of the board, and enter your email address, a user name for the board, and create a password. Shortly thereafter, you will get an email verifying your registration. There is a link to the board on the Bits and Bytes Radio Show website, or you can get to it directly by clicking on this link – Bits and Bytes Bulletin Board

You’ll be able to keep the show alive during the week by continuing discussions on the board, as well as commenting on PC Tips mentioned by Dave, Forrest, and Vinny. In this same manner, we can have topics discussing items mentioned at SPCUG meetings or at SIGS.

If you’ve never been to one of these Web-based Bulletin Boards then part of the fun will be discovering how to move around on the board, opening topics, and posting replies. We even have a section where you can ask questions about “How to do” stuff on the board.

Got something "computer related" to sell? Looking for that rare peripheral? If it's computer related you can submit a short classified ad for exposure in Dave "Bytes". Be sure to include your name and e-mail address in the ad. You can also include a picture of the item. Now some would suggest that there be a charge for this feature but alas, since my bookkeeping skills leave much to be desired I've determined that this will be a free service to all SPCUG members in good standing. "Bytes" is currently sent to almost 1500 homes in the area. Ad requests will be included as soon as possible. Top 10 Dumb Things Users Do That Can Mess Up Their Computers

We all do dumb things now and then, and computer users are no exception. Inadvertently pressing the wrong key combination or innocently clicking OK in the wrong dialog box can change important settings that alter a computer’s behavior or even crash the system.
Nervous newbies are often fearful that one wrong move might break the computer forever. Luckily, short of taking a sledge hammer to the box, the consequences aren’t usually quite that dire. Even so, users often do create problems for their computers and for your network. In this series we'll examine a description of common missteps (in no particular order) you can use to help steer clear of preventable problems.

Plug into the wall without surge protection
Here’s one that actually can physically destroy your computer equipment, as well as the data it holds. You may think your systems are in danger only during an electrical storm, but anything that interrupts the electrical circuit and then starts the current back again can fry your components. Something as simple as someone turning on an appliance that’s plugged into the same circuit (especially a high voltage one such as a hair dryer, electric heater, or air conditioner) can cause a surge, or a surge may be caused by a tree limb touching a power line.
If you have a power outage, you may experience a surge when the electricity comes back on.
You can protect your systems against damage from power surges by always using a surge protector, but it’s important to be aware that most cheap surge protectors will survive only a single surge and need to be replaced afterward. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is better than a surge protector; it has a battery that keeps power flowing smoothly even when there’s an outage, to give you time to gracefully shut down.
