SpoofStick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. A spoofed website is typically made to look like a well known, branded site (like ebay.com or citibank.com) with a slightly different or confusing URL. The attacker then tries to trick people into going to the spoofed site by sending out fake email messages or posting links in public places - hoping that some percentage of users won't notice the incorrect URL and give away important information. This practice is sometimes known as “phishing".

I need you to do me a favor and win this game! I have been trying and I just can't seem to do it. In my defense, I have also been doing work, so I haven't been able to devote my full attention to the game...  

The game field is randomly filled with "crosses" and "zeros".  
Your goal is to fill the whole field with "crosses" using your mouse. Here's the catch - when you click on one of symbols, horizontal and vertical line inverts. That means when you click on a zero, it becomes a cross, but all the other crosses become zeros. Very challenging indeed!

Eraser - Secure Data Removal

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others - passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list can be continued forever.

Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first.

Your first thought may be that when you delete the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface.

Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility.

There are several problems in secure file removal, mostly caused by the use of write cache, construction of the hard disk and the use of data encoding. These problems have been taken into consideration when Eraser was designed, and because of this intuitive design and a simple user interface, you can safely and easily erase private data from your hard drive.

Are your colleagues looking at your strangely because you visit InternetTraffic Report too many times during the day? So just what exactly will this wondrous program do? Most of the time it will sit happily in your system tray (normally in the lower right of the desktop, where the time is shown). I came across your newsletter when doing a search on Google for phishing. (It looks like you did a special piece on Phishing in your September 28, 2004 newsletter).

I work for a company called FraudEliminator,  and I thought our anti-phishing/fraud product (which is completely free) might be of interest to your subscribers.

We are an anti-fraud and anti-phishing company, and our main product (also called FraudEliminator) prevents you from falling for phishing scams and other fraudulent websites. The product prevents your browser from accessing known phishing websites, and uses advanced techniques (such as identifying where the website is "hosted") to determine if a website is a scam. For example, a website with similar text as CitiBank.com, but hosted in Russia, would be identified as a scam. We also allow people who use our product to report phishing sites, which makes our network even stronger. The list of "known" phishing sites is updated every 15 minutes for everyone using the product.

As you probably know, A LOT of people fall for these scams, because most computer users don't know better---I know my grandmother wouldn't. They have gotten to the point where they can look really perfect.

Even without the problem of phishing, there are numerous fake websites that are proliferating across the internet. If you search on google for "television" some of the sites that come up might be fake and just trying to get your credit card info.

Our product is completely free, and has no adware or spyware. Our goal in making the product free is to build a large base of users, which helps everyone because it allows everyone to report fraud as it is identified. We also work with banks and other financial institutions to help identify and stamp out phishing scams. The product will *always* be free. It's also 100% anonymous, and we don't collect any data on our users.

Our goal is to get people to use our product and to protect them from the growing danger of fraud and phishing.

AGENT RANSACK V1.7.3 is my choice for freeware software of the year. I use it continuously and find it one of the most useful apps on my computer. It is far and away the easiest and most incredibly fast way to find a file on your computer. It integrates into your Windows Explorer right-click menu. In very few seconds it can scan any drive or folder to find any reference to the file you are seeking. It's not always easy to remember the exact filename of your document, and opening each file to look inside wastes a lot of time. Agent Ransack displays the text found inside each file, so you don't have to separately open each search result.

Skype

Getting in touch with friends and family is easy with this Internet telephone software, but the functionality is conditional. Skype offers a graphically pleasing interface that's much like a chat program. To make calls, you'll need to create a contact list of friends and family or use the phone-like interface to dial people directly. You also can access a pull-down menu for painless conference calls of up to four people. To make free calls, both parties will need to have the Skype software installed. To call regular phones, you'll need to sign up for a plan with SkypeOut, the developer's paid service that offers cheap by-the-minute calling. We like the intuitive chat-like interface of Skype and we were surprised at the excellent sound quality, even with regular desktop speakers. Similar to a chat client, you can set your availability status, but we also would like to see a missed call indicator or, better yet, some form of voice mail. Overall, we think Skype is a strong contender in the Internet Telephony category, and anyone who's interested in talking for free should give it a try. For international callers who have computers, this program is a no-brainer solution for long-distance bills.

Dead Pixel Buddy

This is a program for testing LCD screens for dead pixels.

Before trying to grasp the meaning of a dead pixel, first you need to understand the technology behind LCD displays. An LCD display is essentially made up of pixels. Each pixel is made up of red, blue and green valves. The valves in each color either block or pass the light source. By manipulating the amount of light passed through, each pixel displays a distinctive color on screen. Pixels consisting of these valves are what make up the image that is ultimately displayed on the screen. A typical monitor has millions of pixels. A dead pixel refers to a pixel with a defect in its ability to display the correct color output. It may look like a tiny black spot on your screen, or any other color that does not correspond to what the actual image should look like.

A typical 17 inch monitor contains up to 4 million pixels. Even a tiny dust particle on one of the pixels during the manufacturing process can create a dead pixel. Or a slight bump during shipping can break one of the highly sensitive pixels.

If you've scoured every inch of your screen but can't find a single dead pixel, you are in luck. Because of the complexity of the design, it is generally regarded dead pixels appearing in some products are inevitable. If you need to absolutely make sure whether you have purchased a defective display, you can use this program. It simply paints your entire screen with one of the colors that make up a pixel to make the dead pixel more conspicuous to the naked eye. Run through the red, green and blue colors in turn and check for pixels that do not match.

Install a Vista wallpaper, and you're basically there. There might be some stability issues if you install VTP, so you'll want to be sure before you install it. The good part is that uninstallation is easy: just go to Add or Remove Programs. Some files are overwritten during the process so keep your setup CD handy if you want to undo all the changes.

Well, not anymore: now LogMeIn makes remote control easier than ever by providing you a simple, fast and free tool to access your PC from anywhere. Just download the client and create an account on their website, and you're ready to go.

The client should be installed and launched in the computers you want to access remotely. Then all you need to do is start your session in the LogMeIn webpage and you'll have immediate access to your computer. You'll be able to manage files, transfer data from the local machine to the remote machine and vice versa (only during the first 30 days, though) and even control the desktop and mouse in the remote PC, with a surprisingly quick response to mouse movements. You can create various users with different privileges or open your remote session temporarily to a guest user, so that he or she can see what you're doing on the PC.

On the downside, image resolution is obviously not very high when remote controlling (forget about viewing photos in the remote PC). Also, the Java-based file manager looks a bit sloppy but that's probably due to Java itself. In all, I think LogMeIn is one of the best free remote control apps I've tried.
